Mini guide to Greenwich

Greenwich is a quaint and historic village as well as a sizeable patch of greenery tucked away in the Southeast of London besides the river Thames. There is plenty to explore, particularly for those interested in the outdoors and maritime history.

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Greenwich is, of course, Greenwich Mean Time, and a visit to the Greenwich Observatory is a must. The Meridian that divides the earth's eastern and western hemispheres passes right through here. At 13:00 every day since 1833, the time-ball, a red ball on a rod on one of the building's turrets, falls. Sailors on ships on the Thames can set their clocks by it.

No visit to this area would be complete without setting foot on the Cutty Sark, built in 1869 and the only surviving tea clipper in the world. It sits besides a large park that slopes up from the river, providing excellent picnic locations with great views of the Docklands area.

An interesting side visit is the Thames Barrier, the world's largest moveable flood barrier that cost £480 million to construct. This exhibition includes a working model of the Barrier and explains the natural forces at work that make the Barrier necessary. Also nearby is the controversial Millennium Dome, the largest of its kind in the world, which is now used for exhibitions.

Greenwich Market is one of the largest and most popular markets in London, selling everything from antiques to modern crafts. Thursdays feature 'antiques and collectables' and Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 'arts and crafts'. For food lovers, don't miss the Farmers Market every Friday, offering a huge range of cheeses, fruits, vegetables and meat.

Greenwich can easily be accessed by the Docklands Light Railway Cutty Sark or Greenwich stations, or by the Jubilee Line. This is a really wonderful area in which to relax and enjoy the greenery, still in easy commuter distance of Central London. It is also not far from the City Airport, for those wanting to travel to Europe or other destinations in the UK.
