Mini guide to Guildford

Guildford in Surrey is a historic town located in the North Downs and is surrounded by some magnificent countryside, much of which belongs to the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The town is a pleasantly eclectic mix of modern big city amenities along with interesting historic buildings and nearby picturesque villages.

Situated on Stag Hill, Guildford Cathedral is the town's focal point. This ecclesiastical masterpiece was designed by Edward Maufe and consecrated in 1961, and it is the only cathedral to be built on a new site in southern England since the Reformation. The interior is truly stunning, with soaring arches that meet honey coloured stone walls and beautiful marble floors.

More of the town's history can be traced at the Guildford Museum, which is located near the High street. Here you can revel in the findings of archaeological digs, which have unearthed everything from Stone Age pots to the contents of Tunsgate's 17th century rubbish dump. Displays featuring artefacts from the town's medieval friary and craft and trades from the same period are also represented.

Guildford has a wide range of shops, many of which are set in traditional historic buildings. However, if you are looking for a more contemporary setting, try the large indoor centre on North street known as 'the Friary'. For eating out, the town offers a complete range of international options including American, Chinese, Indian, Italian, Mediterranean and traditional British restaurants.

The areas surrounding Guilford offer many options for day trips out, with a variety of charming little villages topping the list. Nearby Ripley is a former coaching village full of half-timbered houses and inns, while neighbouring Gomshall offers a great selection of fine pubs and restaurants. Chilworth, Tillingbourne and Pugin are also worth checking out.

Guildford can be reached by travelling along the A3, A3100, A281 and the A246, while rail travellers can take advantage of excellent connections between central London and Portsmouth. London's Heathrow International Airport is the nearest air terminal.
