The Royal Horticultural Society Gardens at Harlow Carr, 2 miles outside of
Harrogate, are probably 68 acres of the most exquisitely landscaped gardens
in the north of England. This is also the Headquarters of the Northern Horticultural
Society, which specialises in growing plants suitable for Northern climates.
The gardens also feature a Museum of Gardening.
Ripley Castle and Gardens, just outside Harrogate, have been home to the Ingilby
family for the last seven hundred years. The castle has displays dating back
to the Civil War and many period furnishings and artwork. The castle is set
within a deer park, surrounded by lakes and gardens that contain the National
Hyacinth Collection and the Tropical Plant Collection.
Within a few miles of Harrogate lies the ancient walled City of York with its

Ripon, 10 miles from Harrogate, lies in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside
with the ruins of Fountains Abbey, founded by Cistercian monks in 1132. It is
Britain's largest monastic ruin and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Ripon Cathedral
dates from 672, represents almost every architectural style and is among the
highest and yet smallest in the UK. It also contains the oldest Anglo-Saxon
crypt in England. Nearby, you will also find the Studley Royal Water Garden,
one of the few surviving examples of a Georgian Green garden full of lakes,
ponds, temples, statues, and bridges. Also, don't miss the nearby Newby Hall
and Gardens, a beautiful residence containing many period treasures, including
Gobelin tapestries, sculptures, porcelain and antique furniture. Newby Hall
is set in a 40-acre garden which includes orchards, a rose garden, tropical
garden and a rock garden.
