Mini guide to Hastings

Famous the world over as the sight of the Battle of Hastings in 1066, the town of Hastings was not actually where the battle was fought but was where William the Conqueror based his operations. The modern town though has many attractions and is not far from the famous battlefield.

When in Hastings be sure to visit the scenic ruins of Hastings Castle. Built in 1067, it was the first Norman castle in England, but was ruined by King John in 1216. There is an audio visual presentation of the castle's turbulent past and from the mount you'll have a sweeping view of the town and coastline. For a more recent taste of Hasting's history see the Smugglers Adventure which recreates the subterranean stashes of the town's 18th century smugglers.

A vigorous and testing walk which recreates William the Conqueror's march to the battlefield begins at nearby Pevensey and ends 19 miles later at Battle. The route is well sign-posted and takes you through some of the most beautiful Sussex countryside.

Hasting's is a mecca for antique lovers, with Courthouse Street having as many as 17 antiques stores -containing everything from 18th century furniture to World War I gas masks. Fish and chips features heavily on the food menus of the many cafes and restaurants. There are also plenty of atmospheric and historic pubs.

Only 8 miles away is Battle, where in 1066 King Harold was felled by an arrow in the eye. The battlefield has been preserved and an audio-visual tour recreates the period. Ruined Battle Abbey still stands over much of the site, including the altar marking the spot where the Saxon King Harold fell.

Trains run hourly from London's Victoria Station or Charing Cross to Hastings. The trip takes two hours. Buses run regularly from London's Victoria Coach Station. If you're arriving by car leave the M25 from London and take the A21 to Hastings.
