Mini guide to Hatfield

Set amid the rolling countryside of eastern Hertfordshire, Hatfield boasts over 1,000 years of history. With numerous heritage houses and fine buildings, this picturesque village offers effortless access to some of southern England's finest scenery.

Hatfield's most striking attraction is Hatfield House. Centrally located in a magnificent 1,500 acre park, this celebrated Jacobean House is famous for its splendid state rooms, rare tapestries and historical armor. Also impressive are the two-storey Marble Hall and Minstrels Gallery. Mill Green Museum with its adjoining reconstructed Mill, is another well-visited attraction.

Although Hatfield today is a modern town, it still retains a village feel. The 'Old Town,' location of Hatfield House and Hertfordshire University's main campus, is a hub of activity for residents and visitors alike. The area is easy to navigate by foot and features many reminders of the town's early days, from fine old buildings to quaint cobbled courtyards.

One of southeast England's premier outlet centers, The Galleria, is located in Hatfield and attracts many out-of-town visitors. With over 60 outlet stores, numerous cafés, restaurants and forms of entertainment on offer, there is something for all budgets and tastes.

Exploring the surrounding region is particularly rewarding. Just a short drive from Livingston, set among leafy country lanes, is the tiny village of Ayot St Lawrence, home of the famous writer, George Bernard Shaw. Shaw's homestead stands on beautiful wooded grounds, which the visitor is free to explore. Great Wood Park (heading towards Northaw) is a 300-acre country park, home to numerous leisure activities, especially for walkers and mountain bikers. The park's visual beauty and tranquil atmosphere make it an ideal location for a day out.

Luton International Airport lies west (17kms) of Hatfield and the larger Heathrow (36kms) and Stansted (35kms) international airports are also conveniently located for those arriving by air. Hertfordshire is well serviced by rail, with trains departing London's King Cross every half-hour for the 20-minute journey. Motorists can reach Hatfield via highways M1 and M25, located east of the A1.
