Mini guide to Hereford

If you're in search of the real England you can't get much closer than Hereford. The heart of Herefordshire, nestled on the banks of the River Wye, this town offers an idyllic blend of unspoiled countryside, distinctive heritage and rural charm.

Dominating the skyline, and Hereford's most striking attraction, the majestic Cathedral boasts some fine examples of architectural excellence from Norman times. Many activities take place in and around the Cathedral year round, including concerts, free recitals, exhibitions, brass rubbing and even a working stonemasons yard.

Leisure time can be filled with many activities in town including a visit to the unique Hereford Museum and Art gallery - a lively hands-on center with an element for all ages. Stepping back in time, other famous attractions include the unique 13th Century world map, Mappa Mundi, and the world's largest chained library.

For shoppers and history enthusiasts alike, take time to stroll the cobbled heart of Hereford and enjoy a spot of traditional shopping or stop in at one of the many bistros and fine pubs lining the leafy lanes and alleyways. On the weekends the sights and sounds of the traditional market will leave a lasting impression.

To further discover Hereford, make sure to experience the famous "'Black and White Village Trail', a 40 mile circular trail through Herefordshire's picturesque rural landscape. Heading west the route runs through orchards, hops-yards, and white villages along the way. On your way back to Hereford take a break and enjoy an afternoon at Domesday Manor House. Its stunning English rose gardens, vineyards and year-round wine tasting won't disappoint you.

If arriving by air Birmingham's International Airport is an hour's drive from Hereford.
