Mini guide to Hinckley

When most people think of Leicestershire in terms of history and heritage, towns such as Melton Mowbray or Market Harborough spring to mind. Hinckley is generally viewed as an industrial town and while this is correct, the town is by no means lacking in historical interest. The name Hinckley suggests this site used to be occupied by Saxon inhabitants, while historians searching deeper have discovered indications of ancient Roman settlements.

More of the town's history can be traced at the town's museum, which is located in a restored 17th century thatched cottage. Inside the museum are a range of displays chronicling the town's rich and varied history with an emphasis on its wool industry. Visitors can also try their hand at knitting a sock on an old Griswold knitting machine.

Burbage Woods consists of 200 acres of semi-natural ancient woodland and unspoilt grassland. Visitors to the woods can enjoy walking, horseback riding and bird watching before settling down to eat at one of the popular picnic areas. The woods are also famous for their especially interesting flora and fauna.

Castle street, the town's main shopping area, has a mix of old fashioned and modern retailers, with some still housed in buildings with traditional Georgian facades. For eating out there is a good selection of restaurants offering English, Indian, Italian and bistro style cuisine. The town also has a market every Monday, Friday and Saturday.

In nearby Ashby de la Zouch you can visit the famous castle which was home to Lord Hastings back in the 15th century and was the focus of many jousting battles in the novel 'Ivanhoe', by Sir Walter Scott. Leicestershire's magnificent countryside can be appreciated from the top of the castle's impressive 24 metre-high tower, while for those with a touch of vertigo an audio tour telling the story of the famous siege is available.

Hinckley is served by the A5 and the M69 motorway, while Hinckley Station is on the railway line that links Leicester with Coventry and Birmingham. For airport connections, Hinckley is served by Coventry and Nottingham East Midlands airports.
