Mini guide to Hungerford
Set in a picturesque valley in western Berkshire between London and Bristol, Hungerford
is famed for its beautiful marshlands, where meadows and streams present an abundance
of flora and fauna. Hungerford is also known for its castle and other spectacular
buildings, as well as its excellent shopping and market.
Many people come to Hungerford specifically for the superb trout fishing, while
the fantastic antique shops provide an alternative allure. Hungerford Castle
retains part of its original structure, including the two south towers, chapel,
outer gatehouse and parts of the curtain wall, while the early 19th century
St Lawrence Church is constructed out of stone brought from Bath.
Strolling through the town in Hungerford is delightful and you will find the
main shopping area is the High street, where local stores and specialist antique
shops are featured. When you are finished here and have visited the castle and
church, the canal and its various countryside paths offer further strolling
opportunities.
Hungerford has many excellent hotels, cafés, traditional pubs and restaurants,
as well as many shops and a street market held every Wednesday. For those who
are lucky enough to visit in July, the HADCAF festival is a display of music
and theatre for all ages, with something for everyone.
Just outside the town is the Hungerford Garden Centre and to the north is the
Little Hidden Farm with its beautiful meadow land. The Kennet and Lambourn valleys
have numerous villages and walks worth exploring, while Swindon celebrates the
Great Western Railway in the Railway Museum. Nearby Newbury is the venue for
the Hennessy Gold Cup and Salisbury has the UK's tallest cathedral.
Hungerford has good access from London via the M4 motorway (junction 14) and
the A338. Trains run the one-hour journey to Hungerford every hour direct from
Paddington station in London. Six National Express buses leave from the capital
every day for the two-hour journey to Hungerford, while Heathrow International
Airport is the closest airport with good transfer options.
