Mini guide to Huntingdon
In the past, Huntingdon was the main town of its own county, Huntingdonshire.
Due to the reorganisation of county boundaries, however, it is now located in
Cambridgeshire to the northeast of London.
The town's greatest claim to fame is as the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell,
who was responsible for the downfall of the absolute monarchy in favour of parliamentary
rule. Born in 1599, Cromwell was educated at the local grammar school, which
now functions as a museum containing portraits of the great man and personal
effects that belonged to him and his family.
The majority of Huntingdon's buildings these days date from the 17th and 18th
centuries, with the Manor thought be the oldest continually inhabited house
in Britain. Another place of interest is the Ramsey Rural Museum, which is located
in an 18th century farm building surrounded by several barns containing the
exhibits.
The town is very active in the field of arts and cultural activities, with
local choirs, dance troupes, bands and drama groups performing regularly. Surprisingly,
for such a small town, there is even a resident professional orchestra.
The nearby countryside is also well worth exploring, as there are lots of country
parks and nature reserves to enjoy. One of the most beautiful areas is the 56-acre
Hinchingbrooke Country Park, where you can wander through woods, around lakes
and across meadows, or even indulge in water sports.
There are also several attractive sights beside the Great River Ouse and in
the Ouse Valley, such as the Paxton Pits Nature Reserve and Holt Island. Animal
lovers should not miss the Hamerton Zoological Park, a designated wildlife conservation
sanctuary, where many animals, including some endangered species and others
that have become extinct in the wild, can be seen.
Huntingdon is well-connected to London, with trains running every half-hour
to King's Cross Station; the journey takes just one hour. The most convenient
airport to the town is London's Stansted Airport.
