Mini guide to Kendal

The 'Auld Grey Town' of Kendal, with its fine houses in grey limestone and narrow medieval closes and courtyards, is the Southern gateway to the Lake District. It's a mecca for climbers and the home of Kendal Mint Cake, the climbers' energy food.
The South Central Lakes contains many areas worth visiting, including picturesque lakes with famous names, and provide visitors with both energetic and restful pursuits. Windermere offers all manner of lake activities; as does Coniston Water, with the 'Old Man' (803m high) towering above. Thirlmere provides clear and pure contemplation while Ullswater is popular for sailing.

Nowhere else will you find nature and culture in such close proximity. Grasmere has Dove Cottage, with Rydal Mount Close by, both former homes of Wordsworth. Sawrey is where Beatrix Potter's characters sprang to life. At Grizedale Forest, you'll find a fascinating sculpture trail, whilst Brantwood, John Ruskin's home above Coniston Water, offers you an insight into the life of this influential writer.

Kendal town offers specialist art and craft shops alongside more traditional shops with clothing for walkers and climbers. The castle in Kendal is well worth a visit and as you explore the narrow winding streets look out for boutique bakeries and cafes boasting home made traditional food and local produce. After a day walking in the stunning countryside you can relax in a traditional pub with real ale and taste the magnificent Cumberland Sausage.

The Victorian holiday resort of Morecambe is nearby, with its huge sandy bay. Also nearby are the market towns of Grange-over-Sands and Cartmel, where you will discover a much-visited priory and the famous Cartmel Races.

Kendal is accessed by the M6 motorway and is only an hour away from the airport at Blackpool. Manchester International airport is about an hour and a half down the M6. Windermere is the nearest rail stop, with regular services from the South. National Express buses also visit Kendal.
