Mini guide to Kenilworth

Located in the lush heart of the English Midlands in the county of Warwickshire, Kenilworth is a charming town with a lengthy history and an abundance of cultural, architectural and leisure attractions.

The town's indisputable highlight is the magnificent Kenilworth Castle, one of England's largest and most impressive ruined fortresses. The castle dates back to the 12th century and is built of rosy-hued sandstone that was quarried locally many hundreds of years ago. It was severely damaged at the end of the English Civil War in the 17th century, but the remains are nevertheless still awe-inspiring.

Other attractions in the area include the ancient hamlet of Little Virginia, located close to the castle and encompassing a number of 17th century thatched homes, and St Nicholas' Church, dating to medieval times. Also of interest is the High street which runs through Kenilworth's Old Town and is dotted with fabulous examples of historical architecture and numerous shops, galleries and restaurants.

Kenilworth is home to four nature reserves - Kenilworth Common, Knowle Hill, Crackley Wood and Parliament Piece - which cumulatively offer excellent opportunities for hiking and bird watching. The Abbey Fields are located close to the castle and are an ideal place for recreation and relaxation, spanning 68 acres of public space and including a pool, lake, children's play area, heritage hiking trail and the ruins of an ancient abbey.

Located just outside of the town centre is Stoneleigh Abbey, a medieval structure that includes breathtaking state rooms and extensive stables, while Shakespeare's birthplace at nearby Stratford-upon-Avon is easily accessible by car.

Kenilworth is well linked to other destinations in England via an extensive network of motorways and is easily accessible by car or coach. There is no train station in the town, but trains stop at the nearby stations of Coventry, Leamington, Warwick and Warwick Parkway; taxis run to Kenilworth from all of these stations. The region is served by flights to and from Birmingham International Airport.
