Mini guide to Kettering

The charming borough of Kettering is at the centre of England and encompasses four main towns (Burton Latimer, Desborough, Kettering and Rothwell) and 22 villages, ranging from large communities such as Broughton and Geddington to tiny hamlets such as Pipewell and Newton.

Kettering is one of seven boroughs in the county of Northamptonshire. Situated in the north of the county, the borough is an area of undulating farmland and scattered woodland.

The Alfred East Art Gallery is the largest art gallery in Northamptonshire. It commemorates one of Kettering's most famous sons, the painter Alfred East. Built in 1913, the gallery contains the world's largest collection of East's paintings as well as works by other artists.

Explore Kettering's history at the Manor House Museum. Alternatively, Heritage Quarter Gardens are open from dawn until dusk, and provide a peaceful setting for a quiet moment's rest, between visiting the museum and gallery.

Wicksteed Park could very well be the world's first leisure park. Founded by Charles Wicksteed in 1916, it is today a successful tourist attraction. The company Charles Wicksteed built up still makes playground equipment in Kettering today.

Kettering Leisure Village (known as KLV) is a major regional sports, leisure, and entertainments centre. The venue has attracted top names in music and entertainment and is firmly established on the concert circuit. The Leisure Village also features a new health club, indoor tennis and squash courts, an arena suitable for a variety of sports such as badminton, basketball and netball. Children will enjoy the indoor adventure playground.

Nearby Peterborough has a wealth of attractions ranging from a modern and extensive shopping centre, to an impressive Norman cathedral. There is even a nearby Bronze Age settlement, known as Flag Fen. However, the Gothic cathedral, built in 1118, is the centrepiece of the city.

Kettering is located in rural Northamptonshire in the centre of England. Although in a beautiful area of the country, it is still in easy reach of London, the Midlands and the North by road and rail. From the south, take the M1 to Northampton; then follow the A43 to Kettering. Kettering is on the London St Pancras railway line with regular stops at Luton (For Luton Airport), Leicester, Nottingham and the north. Travelling time is approximately one hour from London.
