Kings Lynn Hotels
Mini guide to Kings Lynn
Situated on the banks of the River Ouse, Kings Lynn is a picturesque and historic
Norfolk town with a bustling center and a fascinating range of attractions for
visitors. Highlights include the waterside Boat Quay, with its renovated merchants
houses, the ornate Customs House and a statue of Lord Vancouver - the famous Kings
Lynn resident who founded Vancouver in Canada.
Wander down to the far end of High Street, the main shopping and business areas,
and around the corner you will find Queen Street, home to the Town House Museum
of Lynn Life. The museum displays the domestic life of Lynn's merchants, traders
and families from medieval times to the 1950s. A further short walk toward the
Ouse from Queen Street takes you to South Quay, home of the Green Quay, where
you can explore saltwater aquaria, enjoy the spectacular marine film shows and
marvel at the host of wildlife in an interactive habitats gallery.
Leisure time can be filled with many activities, including a visit to the King
Street Arts Center, a lively center for visual and performing arts and one of
the town's most impressive entertainment venues. A little north of King Street
in Tuesday Market Place is the Corn Exchange, which hosts many musical events,
including those of the resident Norfolk Symphony Orchestra. Meanwhile, the surrounding
area is packed with many of Kings Lynn's 40 or more pubs, and is also the location
of many fine bistros, cafes and restaurants.
If you visit King Lynn, you should take time out to explore the beautiful countryside
expanse of the Norfolk Broads. The Broads are home to numerous leisure activities
including hiking, boating and bird watching, and barge holidays on the extensive
canal systems here are popular. Twelve miles south of the town is Downham Market,
where you can visit the fully working Denver windmill which was built in 1835
and has been recently renovated.
Norwich has an international airport with flights to Amsterdam (40 minutes)
and Paris. Stansted is a little further away but offers flights to and from
many more European destinations. Trains depart hourly from London's King Cross
station (duration 90 minutes). Motorists should exit the M1 at Peterborough
and head east on the A47 to reach King's Lynn.
