Mini guide to Kirkcaldy
Situated on the northern shore of the Firth of Forth and affectionately known
as the 'Lang Toun', Kirkcaldy is the largest town in Fife and one of Scotland's
oldest burghs with its thousand year long history. There are plenty of attractions
and activities here for the whole family and a couple of lovely parks.
Kirkcaldy was given royal burgh status by Charles II in 1661 and is well known
as the birthplace of Adam Smith and architect Robert Adam. Notable highlights
include the 15th century Ravenscraig Castle, Ravenscraig Park and the brilliant
Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery with its Scottish works, local history and
exquisite gardens.
Because of Kirkcaldy's marvellous collection of old buildings, it was designated
a conservation area in 1980 and the town includes such delights as the Adam
Smith Centre, Old Parish Church, 18th century Dunnikier House and the 19th century
St Brycedale Church, with its 200-foot spire.
Kirkcaldy is the main shopping hub for the area and the town also boasts one
of Scotland's largest indoor markets, while golfing, go carting and fishing
can also be enjoyed here. There are plenty of entertainment options in the town
and the 475-seat Adam Smith Theatre has regular performances.
There are numerous other attractions in the Kirkcaldy region in the burghs
of Linktown, Dysart and Pathhead, while the picturesque villages of Sinclairtown
and Gallatown make for a nice day out. Kinross is also one of the gateways to
the Highlands and boasts a stunning setting on Loch Leven, while the thriving
market town of Perth has the splendid Scone Palace. Edinburgh is also an easy
drive from Kirkcaldy.
The M90 motorway and A92 (junction 3) provide access to Kirkcaldy and four
trains per hour run here from Edinburgh, while services also run direct from
London. You can go as far as Edinburgh from London by National Express coach;
local buses then go on to Kirkcaldy. Edinburgh Turnhouse Airport is the most
convenient air terminal for reaching Kirkcaldy.
