Mini guide to Kirriemuir
Situated in eastern Scotland at the foot of the Highlands and north of Perth,
Kirriemuir is an intriguing and historical town of narrow, twisting streets and
is the home of Peter Pan. The town lies in an area of outstanding natural beauty
which makes it the perfect base from which to explore the Highlands.
Kirriemuir's claim to fame is that it was the birthplace of the author of Peter
Pan, J M Barrie, who had nine brothers and sisters that all lived together in
the town centre. The house is now a museum where visitors can view parts of
its interior including Barrie's bedroom, which still contains his writing desk.
The town centre itself is packed with quaint and winding streets containing
plenty of attractions including the excellent Aviation Museum, which is loaded
with Royal Air Force exhibits. There are a couple of statues of Peter Pan in
Kirriemuir, one of which stands in the garden of his birthplace and the other
in the centre of the town.
Kirriemuir has its fair share of cafés and traditional pubs and there
are a number of specialist shops worth exploring. Owing to its close proximity
to the fantastic Braes of Angus in the Highlands and to its excellent amenities,
the town is also used as a base for keen hill walkers.
Outside town you will find Airlie Castle and its beautiful gardens, while the
Camera Obscura provides spectacular panoramic views over the Grampians. The
nearby villages of Glamis, Forfar and Letham offer quaint alternatives, while
Dundee, Perth and Carnoustie lie to the south and are an easy drive from Kirriemuir.
Kirriemuir is straightforward to get to, with the M90 motorway running from
Edinburgh to Perth, from where the A90 and A926 connect to the town. There is
no rail access to Kirriemuir; however, Dundee receives frequent trains from
Edinburgh, Perth and London. Buses leave Dundee for Kirriemuir from the Seagate
Bus Station. Dundee Airport is only a few minutes from Dundee town centre.
