What to see by foot: Leeds

Leeds has a lot to offer for those interested in art. The City Art Gallery was founded in 1888 and is located next to Leeds Library and Town Hall in the city centre. Its collection was designated 'of national importance' and boasts one of the best collections of 20th century British art, including works by Turner, Cozens, Cotman and Girtin. The museum also houses the Design Gallery and Craft Shop, which are worth a visit.

Within walking distance from the City Art Gallery is the Henry Moore Institute. Formerly a group of neglected Victorian merchant's offices and warehouses, the institute converted these into an award-winning gallery. The Henry Moore Institute is part of the Henry Moore Foundations and is devoted exclusively to sculpture, collections and research.

Armley Mills was once the largest woollen mill in the world and now houses the Leeds Industrial Museum. Exhibits dating from the 18th and 19th centuries show the history of textiles, clothing, and engine and locomotive manufacture in Leeds.

The Leeds Museums Natural Science Collection is famous for its Molluscan collection., with over 700,000 specimens from land, freshwater, marine, and fossils from all over the world. There are also workshops for children to create their own fossils.

The Thackray Medical Museum showcases medicine through the ages. It is housed in magnificent Victorian buildings and is one of the largest medical museums in Europe. The many displays illustrate the importance of medicine and how the development in medical science has helped public health and healthcare - including the display of medical equipment.
