What to see by car: Leeds

Temple Newsam House, 4 miles outside of Leeds, is known as the 'Hampton Court of the North'. It is the birthplace of Lord Darnley, the husband of Mary Queen of Scots and a magnificent 16th century Tudor-Jacobean country house set in 1,200 acres of parkland. The house is beautifully decorated and has a wonderful collection of Chippendale furniture with the breathtaking Georgian Library and Chinese Room. The gardens and woodlands are also magnificent, especially when the flowers are in full bloom.

Abbey House Museum, located 3 miles outside of Leeds, will transport you back to Leeds in the 1880s. it is a true recreation of shops, streets and work places of Victorian Leeds. Kirkstall Abbey is also nearby, founded in 1152, and it is one of Britain's best preserved abbeys. Many famous artists such as JMW Turner, Thomas Girtin and Moses Griffith have come to paint Kirkstall Abbey's picturesque ruins.

Harewood House, 7 miles outside of Leeds, is the family home of the Earl and Countess of Harewood, and is one of the country's truly great Stately Homes. The exterior of the House was designed by John Carr of York, with the interior created by the Scottish architect Robert Adam. All the furniture was especially made by Thomas Chippendale for Harewood House. For the children, there is an Adventure Playground, you can explore the Gardens and Bird Gardens, or take a boat trip across the lake.

Lotherton Hall, 13 miles north east of Leeds, was the home of the Gascoigne family, who built the house prior to WWI. The house is beautifully furnished in period décor and boasts a costume gallery that displays both modern and historic costumes. The gardens have been replanted to reflect a traditional Edwardian garden and they are lovely to stroll around in.
