Historical interest: Leeds

In about 730 AD, the name Loidis was applied to the district, not to a single
place or settlement, and this is confirmed by two names: Ledsham and Ledston.
These two villages are about ten miles from the city of Leeds and it is believed
that Leodis became Ledes and then Leeds.
The core of the modern city of Leeds was created when the cloth market moved
to Leeds in 1684. The population rapidly grew from 10,000 in the end of the
17th century to over 30,000 by the end of the 18th century, primarily fuelled
by the economic growth created by the cloth industry. Because of this, Leeds
became one of the busiest and richest cities in northern England.
The next growth spurt came from the Industrial Revolution, transforming Leeds
into a centre of manufacturing, transportation and communication, primarily
due to the logistics of the rivers and canals. In 1699 the Aire and the Calder
rivers were made navigable, linking Leeds with the Ouse, Humber and the North
Sea. In 1816 the great Leeds to Liverpool canal was completed. The area around
Leeds also had an abundance of coal and iron ore, which was also extracted and
exported using the Middleton Railway, the first commercial railway in the world.
Leeds became a city in 1893 and with it came the construction of grand new
buildings, such as the Public Library and General Post Office, which still stand
today. By the end of WWI, the face of Leeds had changed from a manufacturing
base to a centre of study, which the city still boasts proudly today. Two colleges
were merged in 1904 to create the University of Leeds. The Colleges of Technology,
Art, Commerce and Education were established, which in 1993 became Leeds Metropolitan
University. St. James Hospital established an international reputation as a
major medical centre, for which Leeds is still known today.
