What to see by car: Leicester

Belgrave Hall and Gardens, 3 miles outside of Leicester, is a delightful Queen
Anne house that was built in the early 18th century. It is now a museum that
allows the visitor to experience the lives of an upper middle class family in
a Georgian and Victorian setting. The house is beautifully decorated with period
furniture and the tranquil garden boasts flowers from the 19th century, as well
as a Rock and Water Garden, Formal Garden, and Monument Garden.
The National Space Centre, 1 mile from Leicester, is the UK's largest attraction
dedicated to space science and astronomy. There are displays of space craft
and five differently themed galleries encompassing rockets, satellites and hundreds
of interactive hands-on activities to enjoy. The Space Centre's Rocket Tower
can be seen from miles away and the visit will entertain young and old.
The National Gas Museum, opened in 1977, is located 2 miles outsides of Leicester
and tells the fascinating story of gas, past and present, with particular reference
to the East Midlands. Many of the artefacts on display were collected during
the conversion to natural gas and many more have since been donated by individuals
and organisations keen to preserve the history of one of the UK's most significant
industrial sectors. It is the largest of its kind in the world. The museum is
housed under the clock tower of a Victorian building which dates from 1878
The Great Central Railway, 9 miles outside of Leicester in Loughborough, is
Britain's only double track main line heritage railway. The line is 8 miles
long and has four stations, each restored to different periods of the main line's
history. The line boasts of over 20 steam and diesel locomotives and a very
large selection of carriages, wagons and dining cars. A must visit for railway
buffs!
The Manor House, 11 miles outside of Leicester in Donington-le-Heath, was built
in the late 13th century and was renovated early in the 17th century. Visitors
can see restored rooms and displays on medieval life, with fine oak furnishings.
The house is set in a 17th century style garden, with flower gardens, an orchard,
herb gardens and a maze.
