Mini guide to Lincoln

An important city since Roman times, Lincoln still has much to enthrall and entice the visitor, from its celebrated cathedral and castle to its delightful medieval shopping lanes.

By far the most impressive of Lincoln's ancient sites is its cathedral. Visible from over 30 miles away, it was begun in 1072 and has survived earthquakes, fires and hurricanes. Highlights contained within the huge interior include the massive stained glass windows known as the Dena's Eye and the Bishop's Eye and the 13th century Angel Choir. The nearby castle with its imposing walls is also not to be missed, with its 19th century prison, complete with chapel, and an exhibition hosting one of only four remaining copies of the Magna Carta.

The best lanes for strolling are those tumbling down the appropriately named Steep Hill to the Witham river. These streets are lined with medieval half-timber houses, many now converted to interesting shops. This cobbled area also contains the cathedral and castle.

Steep Hill and around Bailgate and the High Street are a shoppers delight, whether you want to purchase clothing, books, antiques or arts and crafts. For food and drink, look no further than the Wig and Mitre pub near the cathedral. This 14th century building houses a restaurant and bar, or try the Adam and Eve tavern, the oldest pub in Lincoln.

An interesting trip outside of Lincoln is Boston, where the pilgrims were imprisoned before they sailed on the Mayflower. Their cells can still be seen, as can a memorial on the town's riverbank.

Trains arrive every hour from London's Kings Cross Station (duration: 2 hours). National Express buses from London's Victoria Coach Station also service Lincoln (duration: 4 hours). If you're driving from London, take the M1 north to the junction with the A57, then head east to Lincoln.
