Mini guide to Liverpool

Famous for producing the Beatles and Mersey sound, as well as its football club, Liverpool is set on the Mersey estuary, and perhaps appears less appealing at first glance, but is a lively city with an important maritime history and sizeable Irish population.

Liverpool's two main highlights are the historic Albert Docks and the Beatles tourist sites. The Albert Docks, now listed as a World Heritage Site, dominate the riverside district and offer a whole range of attractions. Thousands of Beatles fans visit Liverpool each year to experience the sights and sounds of the Fab Four's hometown. Popular places for Beatles fans to tour include Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane and the site of the Cavern, where they started out.

Chinatown's Berry Street restaurants offer excellent oriental cuisine and Slater Street offers a good choice of eateries. Liverpool nightlife can be rowdy, especially during the small hours of the morning, but most areas are safe enough for visitors. Clubs and bars fill the central area of the city most nights of the week.

Two of the city's most famous pubs are located a short hop from the centre of the city, named 'the Philharmonic' on Hardman St and one of John Lennon's favourite old hang-outs 'Ye Cracke', which can be found on Rice St.

At the heart of Merseyside, Liverpool is further enhanced by its neighbours Halton, Knowsley, Southport, St Helens and Wirral.

Liverpool is served by an excellent road network, regular trains from London with connections to many local towns, bus services, and its own international airport, located just 8 miles from the city centre.
