What to see by car: Liverpool
    
There's so much to see in the region that it's best done by car. Liverpool
and the surrounding area offer much to the visitor, from impressive museums
and all kinds of galleries, to pleasant natural stretches of coastline and woodlands.
Speke Hall is a marvellous example of an Elizabethan hall found six miles south
of Liverpool. The Tudor home dates back to 1490, and is good value for time
and money. After this, a trip to Paul McCartney's childhood home at 20 Forthlin
Road should be a satisfying contrast. The modest housing estate home is now
a National Trust property, and has been fully restored to its original 50's
look.
Across the Mersey River is the delightful district of Wirral. Port Sunlight
is a Victorian purpose-built village with a large collection of brilliant arts
and crafts and architecture. The place resembles something out of a fairytale
book and is well worth a visit. New Brighton features the peace and solitude
of open seascapes and the sound of sea-birds, with the historic Fort Perch Rock
(built in 1827 to defend the Mersey) and lighthouse completing the romantic
image. Alternatively, fun for the whole family can be had at the numerous amusement
arcades, fun rides, and Seacombe Aquarium.
To the north of Liverpool along the coast lies Southport, the major focus for
tourism in the borough. This elegant resort town features pavement cafes, tree-lined
boulevards and stunning floral displays. For family fun and white-knuckle rides
a visit to Pleasureland is a must. In addition there are a host of other attractions,
both indoor and outside, for you to explore. As England's golfing capital, Southport
is home to Royal Birkdale, just one of six championship-standard golf courses.
The 22 miles of beach along Southport's coastline have dramatic dunes that are
a haven for many rare examples of flora and fauna. The area is also one of Britain's
premier bird watching locations.
