Mini guide to Livingston
Livingston, an area rich in history, lies nestled in the heart of Scotland.
With all the assets of a modern city, from innovative museums to one of Britain's
largest shopping complexes, Livingston has something for everyone.
Acting as a three-in-one attraction featuring a museum, farm and discovery
center, The Almond Valley Heritage Center is one of the area's most popular
attractions. The museum is full of things to prod, shake and discover, and is
great for the whole family. Livingston also houses Europe's largest outdoor
skate park.
Livingston is an urban mass and you can easily get lost if you don't know your
way around. However, Livingston village, the town's small old quarter, is a
pleasant and stress-free area to wander while admiring the many quaint buildings
and cottages. This area houses many of the town's traditional arts and crafts
stores.
Livingston is most renowned with 'out-of-towners' as being home to one of Britain's
largest shopping complexes. McArthur Glen Designer Outlet offers 50 per cent
discounts on High Street prices in almost a hundred stores and houses a number
of local stores such as the Livingston Gallery. Almondvale Shopping Complex
is also centrally located, and both complexes offer numerous bars, cafés
and restaurants.
Livingston is also an ideal base for discovering Scotland's countryside. Travelling
northeast, Beecraig's County Park is perched high in the Bathgate Hills. Miles
of walking trails criss-cross through scenic woodlands and a hike to the top
of Cockleroy Hill, with its panoramic views, is especially rewarding. The park
caters for a wide range of recreational activities and even includes a working
deer farm.
Edinburgh International Airport is located west of Livingston within easy reach
of the country's main road network. Situated next to the M8 Motorway (junction
3) between Edinburgh and Glasgow, Livingston is approximately 17 miles from
Edinburgh. Rail services run every 30 minutes to and from Bathgate/Edinburgh
stopping at Livingston's Northern station, and hourly to and from Glasgow Central/Edinburgh,
terminating at Livingston South.
