Mini guide to Llandudno
Llandudno lies on the north coast of Wales between the headlands of Great Orme
and Little Orme. It has been a seaside resort since Victorian times and has managed
to retain much of its Edwardian and Victorian charm and splendour despite being
the country's largest seaside resort.
To the northwest of the town is Great Orme's Head, the towering limestone headland
that ends in cliffs that plunge into the sea. Due to a lack of roads, scaling
Great Orme in Victorian times was only for the hardy and sure footed. As the
resort became more popular a cable tramway was built to carry passengers up
Great Orme in 1902. It is Britain's only cable-hauled public road tramway and
visitors can still travel up in an original early 20th-century tramcar. This
was joined in 1969 by the longest cabin lift in Britain, which offers some spectacular
aerial views.
Below the lift and near Happy Valley, lies a dry ski slope and toboggan run,
which is host to the annual UK Artificial Ski Championships. Once at the summit
of Great Orme you can walk or drive the four-mile circuit of Marine Drive, a
road that was carved into the limestone cliffs in 1878 affording views of the
headland's most dramatic scenery. There is also a visitor centre here full of
displays about the history and wildlife of the headland. Great Orme has been
mined since the Bronze Age and at Great Orme Mines you can visit part of a Bronze
Age mine, see archaeologists at work and watch an audio visual display.
There are two sweeping sandy beaches at Llandudno: the award winning North
Shore and the quieter West Shore, backed by sand dunes. Here you can swim, ride
donkeys or just relax. The town also offers a long crescent-shaped promenade,
some good shopping and a 2,295 foot long pier, the longest in Wales.
There is plenty of accommodation in Llandudno ranging from five-star hotels
to cosy guest houses, cottages and caravans. There is a train station with frequent
services from Cardiff and National Express coaches also provide connections
to destinations across the country. To reach Llandudno by car, exit the M56
and follow the A55 expressway.
