Mini guide to Maidstone

The vibrant town of Maidstone, in the centre of Kent, offers a delightful combination of historical attractions, great shopping, good nightlife and easy access to some of southern England's best countryside and heritage sites.

The medieval Archbishop's Palace, on the banks of the River Medway, offers a view of Maidstone's history. In the Archbishop's Stables is the Tyrwhitt-Drake Museum of Carriages, boasting a large collection of horse-drawn vehicles. Another major attraction is the Maidstone Museum and Art Gallery, housed in a fine Elizabethan manor in the southeast and containing an eclectic collection of exhibits covering local and natural history, archaeology, applied art and costume, plus Japanese artefacts.

Maidstone is an enchanting place to explore on foot. Strolling from the grand Maidstone Bridge along High street takes you past the glass and steel roofed Royal Star Arcade, set in the grounds of an 18th century coaching inn and winner of many architecture prizes. Just a little farther is the 19th century Corn Exchange Arcade, home to the Hazlitt Theatre and a variety of shops and cafés.

There are plenty of other shopping options, with the ornate Gabriels Hill, busy Week street, and the large indoor Chequers Centre. Maidstone has a wealth of open public space within the town itself and in the surrounding countryside. Mote Park offers acres of woods and grassland, as well as a lake. Nearby, the Maidstone Leisure Centre has swimming pools, fitness classes and kids' activities; while the new complex on Barker road is great for cinemas, restaurants and nightclubs.

The beautiful surrounding countryside is littered with attractions, including the moat-enclosed Leeds Castle, a Doomsday book-listed Norman stronghold. For nature lovers and hikers, the North Downs Way and the ancient coastline of the Saxon Shore Way are also within easy reach. Alternatively, near the attractive village of Aylesford, Kits Coty is a Megalithic tomb thought to be older than Stonehenge.

By car from London and the rest of the UK, you can get to the city via the M25 and M26/M20 motorways. Maidstone is accessed from junctions 5, 6, 7 and 8 of the M20. Kent's closest international airport is Gatwick, from where you can be in the heart of the county in just 45 minutes. Alternatively, you can catch the Gatwick Express train and arrive at Maidstone Station via Central London.
