Mini guide to Malvern

Literally translated from an ancient British dialect as 'bare hill', Malvern is a collection of villages just east of Hereford that grew in prominence from the 18th century onwards as a result of the health giving spring waters. The town is surrounded by beautiful countryside and is also known for its interesting architecture and connection with Morgan cars.

You can still find various spring water wells around the Malvern Hills including Holly Well, originally the most popular well near Malvern Wells, and St Ann's Well, which spouts close to Great Malvern and the bathhouse. Malvern's other claim to fame is the handmade Morgan cars that have continued to be produced here since 1909; tours of the factory are popular.

The main town in the area is Great Malvern and owing to the wealth brought in from the wells, the town sports numerous attractive and grand buildings that have been influenced by a variety of styles. The most prominent among these is perhaps the 11th century Gothic Priory Church with its lofty tower. The Malvern Museum is located nearby at the Abbey Gateway.

Church street has its fair share of high street brand name outlets as well as specialist local shops and the town is also partial to the odd antiques fair. Malvern also has a cinema and theatre, and happens to be the home of the renowned master violinist Nigel Kennedy.

Nearby is the fairytale like Eastnor Castle, situated in a delightful wooded setting, while medieval Tewkesbury and the cathedral cities of Hereford and Worcester are also well worth a look. Keen shoppers should head for Cheltenham, with its elegant streets lined with fashionable boutiques and galleries.

Malvern is fed by the A449 and is less than 10 miles from the M5 motorway. Two trains per hour go from London's Euston and Paddington stations to Great Malvern and an hourly train runs to the town from Birmingham International Airport via Malvern Link. Additionally, there are a couple of National Express buses to Malvern from London and Birmingham daily.
