Mini guide to Manchester

Located in the northwest administrative district of Greater Manchester, Manchester
stands ready to surprise those expecting to see a dour, industrial city. On
the contrary, Manchester is a pleasant metropolis that has successfully transformed
itself into one of the most beautiful and tastefully modern urban centres of
England. From charming old Victorian Gothic buildings to enthralling edutainment
venues, Manchester appeals to visitors of all ages.
The city is one great museum stretching from Roman times to the modern era.
Perhaps the highlight of Manchester's heritage is Castlefield, while in the
city centre there are several Victorian Gothic structures, such as universities
and churches. Main attractions in the city include Old Trafford, home to the
famous Manchester United Football Club, the Royal Exchange Theatre, Perpendicular
Cathedral, the Museum of Science and Industry and the Salford Quays dockside
district.
Manchester boasts over 130 parks, including Heaton and Wythenshawe, where you
can take a refreshing break from the architectural attractions of the city and
enjoy activities such as athletics, cycling, golf, bowls, football, tennis,
angling and sailing.
Among the countless nightlife options to explore, The Gay Village, based around
Canal Street, boasts a brilliant outdoor cafe-bar scene standing under the legacy
of the industrial revolution - weather-worn viaducts, massive warehouses and
moth-eaten market buildings.
The city's central location in England's northwest makes it a great base for
rewarding daytrips into the surrounding countryside. To the north lie the popular
seaside town of Blackpool and the magnificent natural scenery of Lancashire,
while to the south both Cheshire and Sheffield offer up countless opportunities
for fantastic touring. Those with more time on their hands can penetrate into
northern Wales for some of the most isolated and rugged wilderness in Britain.
Manchester is well served by all modes of transportation, including air, road,
train and coach. Manchester International Airport is close to the city centre
and is constantly expanding its range of international and domestic destinations.
There are also half hourly express trains from London Euston station.
