Geography of Manchester

Located just inland from Liverpool in the northwest of the country, Manchester
straddles the banks of the Irwell River in what was formerly part of Lancashire.
The surrounding countryside of Greater Manchester features wooded foothills,
wide plains and moorlands.
There are more than 130 parks throughout Manchester, all of which are within
easy driving distance of the city. There is a wide range of sporting facilities
to choose from, including athletics, cycling, golf, bowls, football, tennis,
angling and sailing. Or perhaps your idea of exercise is to take a pleasant
stroll through some marvellous greenery and plant life, as Manchester's parks
bring the countryside to the city's doorstep.
The parks form a link to the Mersey Valley to the south of the city and the
Medlock Valley Way in east Manchester, and are a vital part of the continued
development of the Red Rose Forest, proving you don't have to travel miles out
of the city to get back to nature. Wildlife, woodland and waterways are all
within reach for the visitor.
Heaton Park, to the north of the city, is classed as one of Manchester's principal
parks. Set in 259 hectares (640 acres) of green park and woodland, the site
is nestled in the foothills of the Pennines. Visitors of all ages will discover
an attractive setting for a wide range of leisure activities. Attractions include
Heaton Hall and Gallery, a farm centre, pets corner, livery stables and horse
riding, donkey hire, horticultural centre, woodland area, boating lake, angling,
golf course, pitch and putt, bowling greens, football pitches and a tram museum.
To the south, Wythenshawe Park is a holder of the prestigious Green Flag Award,
which is held by a limited number of parks in the country and is recognition
of a facility of excellence. The park occupies 109 hectares (270 acres) and,
as well as marking the finish of the Manchester Marathon and presenting an annual
firework display. It boasts a Horticultural Centre, community farm, 16th century
hall, woodland walks and a range of exercise and leisure activities.
