Mini guide to Marlow
Located four miles south of High Wycombe on the southern tip of Buckinghamshire,
Marlow is a charming historic town set against the beauty of the Chiltern Hills.
With the River Thames running through the town, it is the perfect destination
for visitors looking for a peaceful holiday or short break.
The Old Parsonage and adjoining Deanery, Marlow's oldest buildings situated
at the top of St Peter street, are part of an original 14th century house which
historians have surmised as probably having once been part of a rectory. The
buildings are notable for their decorated windows and panelling, as well as
their attractive ivy covered exteriors.
Among other places of interest around the town is the Court Garden. This 18th
century house has now been converted to accommodate leisure facilities including
a swimming pool and theatre, while the All Saints Parish Church is a 19th century
construction built on the site of an old 11th century church.
For a small town Marlow has a surprising number of entertainment amenities
including 22 pubs, eight cafés and 18 restaurants. Among the restaurants
are Chinese, Italian and traditional British eateries, while many of the inns
and pubs serve traditional, old fashioned pub food. Nightlife in the town is
sedate and generally consists of socialising over a pint at one of the local
pubs.
For an interesting day out in one of Buckinghamshire's nearby towns, try Henley-on-Thames.
Famous for its annual boating event known as the Regatta, Henley has a range
of attractions including Fawley Court, a 17th century building designed by the
world famous Christopher Wren. Boat trips on the River Thames are also available
here for whiling away pleasant summer afternoons.
Marlow can be accessed by car via the M40 motorway and the A404 south towards
Marlow. The town has its own train station with connections to London, while
Heathrow and Gatwick international airports provide the closest international
air connections.
