Situated in South Wales between Cardiff and the Brecon Beacons at the heads of
the valleys, Merthyr Tydfil is surrounded by scenic beauty and has commendable
visitor facilities. The town makes the perfect base for exploring the spectacular
Brecon Beacons National Park and has numerous notable delights of its own.
Merthyr was an important town during the Industrial Revolution and the town's
wonderful heritage can be seen in the various museums. Joseph Parry, the country's
most celebrated composer, was born in Merthyr and you can see his home at Chapel
Row, while the magnificent early 19th century Cyfarthfa Castle contains a museum
and art gallery.
As the centre for the heads of the valley region, Merthyr Tydfil has plenty
of attractions, leisure facilities and entertainment for tourists, including
the Castle street cinema and the High street chapel, with its selection of lunch-time
concerts. Additionally, Merthyr Tydfil's local heritage trails are a good opportunity
to sample the town's most notable sights.
You will find opportunities for cycling and golfing in and around Merthyr and
there are a number of leisure centres in the city. Shopping facilities are excellent
and street markets are held every Tuesday and Saturday, while cafés,
restaurants, coffee shops and pubs are plentiful.
The Brecon Beacons are a must-see and a climb to the peak of Pen y Fan offers
awesome views. Farther afield to the south of Merthyr Tydfil, Caerphilly is
best known for its cheese and medieval castle, one of Wales' most spectacular.
Farther south is the capital of Wales, Cardiff, with its superb shopping, charming
Civic Centre and excellent museums.
Merthyr Tydfil is only 25 miles from the M4 motorway at junction 27. Trains
leave every hour from London's Paddington Station and go via Cardiff to Merthyr,
once a day from Barry and every hour from Birmingham International Airport.
National Express coaches operate a service to Merthyr every two hours from Birmingham
International Airport and numerous services from London, while Cardiff International
Airport is the nearest air terminal.
