Geography of Middlesborough

Middlesbrough boasts a superb and varied countryside and coastal geography,
with the North York Moors National Parkland the Tees Valley close by.
The town itself is located on the mouth of the Tees River and is compact is
size and relatively flat. On the south-east horizon of Middlesbrough lies the
conical form of Roseberry Topping, also known as the 'Miniature Matterhorn'.
From its peak the views over the Cleveland Hills and across Teesside to the
North Sea are stunning. It was used as a beacon station at the time of the Spanish
Armada and during the Napoleonic Wars.
The Tees Valley lies between Durham County and rural North Yorkshire and is
remarkably rich in wildlife, from the seals and bird life of the estuary and
coast, to the woodlands, meadows and moor land beyond the towns and cities.
There are over 300 acres of land in this area that are protected nature reserves,
managed by the Tees Valley Wildlife Trust. This pristine nature is one of the
main attractions of the Middlesbrough area and something every visitor can enjoy.
Similarly, the North York Moors boasts a great variety of landscapes - woods,
sandstone towns, streams, farmland, and the coast. The varied landscapes owe
much of their appearance to the underlying geology, the results of over 200
million years of history. This history has seen North Yorkshire flooded by oceans,
covered in huge river deltas and most recently invaded by great ice sheets,
it is these events and what was left behind that makes the Jurassic geology
of this area one of the best in Britain.
