Mini guide to Middlesbrough

Located in the heart of North East England in the Teeside urban area, Middlesbrough is a modern town boasting an excellent selection of cultural attractions, scores of world-class restaurants and endless shopping opportunities.

The Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge is the area's most renowned and popular attraction, allowing visitors the chance to cross the Tees River in a suspended gondola that hangs 160 feet above the water affording fabulous views of the area.

Three superb museums are located in and around the town including the Captain Cook Birth Place Museum, which commemorates the life and work of Captain James Cook, Middlesbrough's most famous son who made enormous contributions to the field of maritime exploration in the 18th century. The Dorman Museum features a number of temporary exhibits and a permanent display focusing on the history of Middlesbrough, while the Middlesbrough Art Museum houses an array of contemporary works by national and international artists.

Middlesbrough is one of the leading retail centres in the North East, with four shopping malls and a host of enticing boutiques and specialty shops. A wide selection of restaurants and bistros are scattered around town offering visitors the choice of a wide range of local and international dishes.

The nearby North York Moors National Park, an extensive area of heather-blanketed moors, has changed very little in the past five decades and provides fabulous opportunities for scenic walks, cycling and horseback riding in a pristine and natural environment. Another nearby highlight is Raby Castle, an ancient and well-preserved fortress located approximately 20 miles from Middlesbrough.

Middlesbrough is easily accessible from London and other parts of the UK via road or rail connections, with the A1 travelling north-south via Darlington and Durham and the London to Scotland train line cutting through the region. The town is located within a short distance of the Durham Tees Valley Airport, which provides frequent domestic and international flight connections. Ferry ports at Hull and Newcastle provide maritime transport to the European continent.
