Mini guide to Milton Keynes

Located in north Buckinghamshire, Milton Keynes is becoming increasingly popular with tourists who are discovering both the historical sites and modern developments the city has to offer. There is also a vast selection of parklands, lakes and woodlands for those enjoying the outdoor life.

Milton Keynes is most famous for its shopping facilities, and the Central Milton Keynes Shopping Centre attracts millions of visitors from all over Britain and even from overseas. The city is also home to an array of excellent amusement attractions, making it a great destination for the whole family.

Central Milton Keynes Shopping Centre is one of the longest under-cover shopping areas in Europe. Its more than 190 shops range from large national stores to smaller specialist shops. There are also a wide range of additional customer facilities such as restaurants and cafés, fountains and street entertainment, and the crèche, a fun place for children of all ages.

Milton Keynes Museum is housed in a beautiful Victorian farmstead and has large and constantly changing selection of displays. The museum also follows the history of the Milton Keynes area, including North Buckinghamshire and South Northamptonshire, from 1800 to the present day. Collections include social, domestic, industrial and agricultural items with a connection to the area.

Around the town are plenty of other attractions to keep families busy. Xscape is the ultimate entertainment destination, combining Europe's largest indoor 'real snow' ski slope, indoor rock climbing wall, 16-screen cinema multiplex, and family entertainment centre.

There is a fine selection of restaurants in the city, offering every kind of food imaginable. Art lovers will enjoy MK Gallery, which presents six to eight exhibitions of contemporary and modern art a year. Additionally, visitors can try their luck at Towcester racecourse, just a few kilometres to the north.

Nearby Althorp is the resting place of Princess Diana and features the 'Diana, A Celebration' exhibition. Blenheim Palace, one of the finest examples of English Baroque architecture, contains an excellent collection of tapestries, paintings, sculptures and fine furniture, all set in magnificently gilded state rooms.

Milton Keynes is reached by taking the M1 from London, exiting at junction 13 and then following the A421 into the town. The total distance is 87km. The town has convenient and frequent rail links to London, while the closest airport is London Luton.
