Mini guide to Minehead
Minehead is a small coastal town in West Somerset with a history dating back as
far as the 11th century. Around the late 19th the town began to develop itself
as a holiday destination with some help from the famous Luttrell family. Now known
for being home to one of Billy Butlin's famous holiday camps, Minehead is one
of the UK's most popular seaside resorts.
Aside from Minehead's scenic coastline, nearby Exmoor National Park is one
of the region's most popular visitor attractions. The park is a vast scenic
greenbelt area of open moorland that is perfect for gentle walks or more challenging
treks, depending on your disposition.
Typical British seaside fun can be found around the town and there is a fine
golf course for golfing fans; while rail enthusiasts should check out the West
Somerset Railway, the longest privately owned passenger rail line in the UK.
Visitors to the railway can enjoy riding on heritage steam and diesel locomotives
which are operated both for tourists and the benefit of the local community.
Traditional British fare is the predominant theme of Minehead's eating establishments,
with the town offering some fantastic fish 'n' chip shops. There are also a
small number of international restaurants for those wanting something a little
more exotic. The local pubs are favourite evening spots and are generally packed
with both locals and visitors who mingle together in a friendly seaside town
environment.
For a day out from Minehead, head for Porlock Bay. This small town just down
the coast from Minehead is a little quieter, but is still popular on account
of the pleasant villages that surround it. Bossington, Luccombe, Lynch, Horner
and Selworthy all have their own unique characters and are well worth a visit.
For drivers, Minehead can be reached via the M5 motorway and A39, while those
arriving by rail can take a connecting train from one of the larger Somerset
destinations to Minehead Station. The nearest air connection is at Bristol International
Airport.
