Newbury, located in West Berkshire, is a historic market place surrounded by beautiful villages and scenic countryside. It has many attractions including the site of a crucial Civil War battlefield.

While there make sure you visit the remarkable gardens and entrancing rooms of Highclere Castle. A person heavily responsible for the castle's grandness is the 5th Earl of Carnarvon who, along with Howard Carter, discovered Tutankhamen's tomb. You can even visit the Egyptian Exhibition, which holds several treasures associated with him. Special events such as Shakespeare performances and garden operas also occur in the grounds. Other sites of interest include the famous racecourse, and the gentle waters of the Kennet and Avon Canal.

For a walk with an historical theme, traverse the battlefields of 1643 and 1644 where King Charles I suffered two crucial defeats at the hands of Cromwell. Maps of the site are available at the tourist office to allow you to follow the footsteps of the two sides.

For shopping enthusiasts, the lively market on Thursday and Saturday (dating from 1204) contains has everything from clothes to food to antiques. For a more modern experience visit the Kennet Shopping Centre. Eating places vary from traditional pubs to fashionable restaurants. Sport enthusiasts should visit Newbury racecourse, home to both flat and jump meets.

Close to Newbury are a host of places to visit, historic Marlborough is just a few miles away, as is the pretty village of Whitchurch. Also within easy travelliing distance is the ancient university city of Oxford, with its dreaming spires and wealth of historical architecture.

There are frequent Thames Trains services to and from London Paddington taking about 1 hour. By car leave the M4 at Junction 13 and take the A34 to Newbury, from the M3 leave at Junction 9.
