Travelling to Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Newcastle-upon-Tyne is well serviced by all transport options, including air, rail, sea and road.

Rail is the most efficient means of reaching Newcastle from within Britain and the main east coast line from London Kings Cross station passes through Newcastle en-route to Scotland, with trains departing half-hourly (duration: 3 hours). There are also local connections to Northern destinations and onwards to the rest of England.

Newcastle International Airport receives flights from many UK centres and has limited services to several continental European cities and Scandinavian destinations. Located 6 miles northwest of the city near the A696, it can easily be reach using the regular and efficient Newcastle Metro from Central station (duration 25 mins.) A bus service also serves the airport from Eldon Square and Haymarket Bus Station in town. Taxis are also available outside all terminal buildings.

National Express coaches serve Newcastle from towns and cities throughout Britain. The Newcastle coach station is situated at Gallowgate, and there is plentiful parking nearby.

The A1(M) from southern England feeds directly into Gateshead, south of the city, dispersing the traffic onto several secondary motorways (journey time about 5 hours from London). A number of arterial roads approach the city from the west (A69) and southwest (A692). Other good routes approaching the city are the M1(Leeds) M18 and A1. The A69 Carlisle-Newcastle road takes you through the beautiful scenery of the Tyne Valley and Hadrian's Wall country, it is also the best route to and from Glasgow and Southwest Scotland.

The International Ferry Terminal at Royal Quays is approximately seven miles east of Newcastle via the A1058 and A19 and is well signposted. Car ferry services operate direct to Tyneside from Scandinavia and Germany.
