Geography of Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Newcastle-upon-Tyne has been an important and strategic centre of North-eastern
England since the Romans built fortifications on the Tyne river as an extension
to the Hadrian Wall defensive line. Since the 10th C the city has continued
to grow as an important commercial centre for the Northeast, with a busy port
servicing destinations in North-western continental Europe and Scandinavia.
Located approximately 7 miles inland of the coast, upriver of the Tyne, Newcastle
occupies the Northern banks of the river, while its sister city, Gateshead,
is on the southern bank. Together they are the principal urban areas of the
Tyne and Wear county. To the east of the city are the coastal suburbs of North
and South Shields. Further south on the coast, within striking distance, is
the popular centre of Doncaster.
To the west of Newcastle is the picturesque Tyne valley, popular with tourists
for its lovely scenery, and most importantly, the several forts and museums
dotted about the countryside which are associated with Hadrians's wall. Remnants
of the wall remain in selected parts.
To the south lies the busy centre of Middlesborough, while the Scottish border
is a mere hour's drive to the north. For motorists, Carlisle and the West coast
are also within easy reach of Newcastle.
