What to see by foot: Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Newcastle is small enough to explore on foot, and the main BCD (including Gateshead) is dissected by the Tyne river. Two of Newcastle's most recognisable icons are found by strolling along the Tyne. Both are bridges and the older, Tyne bridge, resembles Sydney harbour bridge, and was built in the late twenties at the same time as its more famous cousin. In 1999 a more futuristic footbridge, the Millennium bridge - with its oddly curving shape, was added.

The revamped Graingertown area has converted classical Victorian architecture into a cosmopolitan hub for shopping, eating and pubbing. Also within easy reach is the Quayside on Grey Street, which offers a great selection of places to eat. It is also the place to go out on the 'Toon'.

The Theatre Royal is another city landmark and home to the Famous Royal Shakespeare company, responsible for contributing to Newcastle's reputation as a centre for the arts in the North of England. Culture vultures will also appreciate the Laing Art Gallery and Newcastle Hancock Museum which exhibits major works from Europe's finest contemporary artists. Annually the Newcastle Comedy Festival, the Green Festival and the Irish Festival all bring the city to life.

Newcastle's Chinatown is another busy and popular centre worth exploring on foot, with its busy oriental street markets and bustling food stalls.
