What to see by car: Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Newcastle-upon-Tyne is a good launching point for exploring the coastline of the Northeast, visiting the historic Hadrian's Wall and heading for Scotland.

The Military Vehicle Museum and Castle Leazes are located together not far from the city. Built in the corner of the lovely Leases Park, the castle itself an interesting visit and great place for a picnic. Visitors may tour the castle or relax in its beautiful gardens, while history buffs will find that the Military Museum provides fun for the whole family.

Several good beaches are found within close proximity of the city, particularly at Whitley Bay and South Shields, and the coast is lined with quaint B&Bs and pubs.
Nearby is also the busy town of Sunderland.

One of the areas newest and more bizarre, if somewhat controversial, attractions is the massive iron 'Angel of the North'. It is a massive statue - arms/wings outspread that is easily recognisable when approaching the city by rail or road from the south.

The best examples of the Roman Hadrian's Wall that traverses the North of England are found nearby in the Tyne valley between Hexham and Brampton. There are a number of sites and museums offering insights into the history, including; Chester's Roman Fort and Museum, Housestead's Roman Fort, Vindolanda Fort and Birdoswald Roman fort.
