Mini guide to Newmarket
The old Suffolk town of Newmarket has been famous as a horseracing center since
the time of James I. Most visitors come to see the famous courses and Britain's
first and only equestrian museum.
Newmarket is the only racecourse in Britain with two separate racetracks -
the scenic July racecourse, home of the July Cup, and the Rowley Mile course,
home of the Champion Stakes. Newmarket also houses the National Horseracing
Museum which details 300 years of the sport's history, including paintings and
videos of famous races and horses. You can also tour the National Stud where
some of the world's finest horses are based and bred. For a break from racing
visit Nell Gwynne's house, the infamous mistress of Charles II.
For a tour with a difference enquire at the National Horseracing Museum for
a horse-back tour of the town. It takes in the historic sights and allows you
to gallop on the heath past bronze statues of famous horses from the past, as
well as taking in the Jockey Club where the sport's rules and regulations are
Shopping is centred on high street shops and exclusive designer clothing stores,
which cater for the affluent locals or visitors to the racecourse. Likewise
there is a high standard of fine dining, although there are many pubs catering
for the frequent influx of race-goers.
Nearby places of note include Cambridge, which is a short car or train ride
away. Cambridge houses one of the world's most famous universities and its colleges
boast impressive medieval architecture. It also gives the option of punting
along the scenic River Cam and admiring the city's ancient spires and tranquil
Trains leave London's Liverpool Street Station every 45 minutes for Cambridge,
where you can change trains for Newmarket. About eight National Express buses
leave London's Victoria Coach Station for Norwich every day, stopping at Newmarket
along the way. If you're driving from Cambridge, head east on the A133.
