Norwich Hotels
Mini guide to Norwich
Norwich is an enchanting historic city and a thriving modern metropolis. It boasts
some of the finest medieval architecture in Britain with its cathedral, castle,
city walls, and winding streets, making it a fascinating place to spend a few
days in Norfolk, Northwest of London.
Sights of note include the impressive Norman cathedral with the country's second
tallest spire and 1000 illustrated stone roof bosses, making it one of the finest
Romanesque churches in Europe. The Castle was built by the Normans as a Royal
Palace and now houses an outstanding Museum and Art Gallery. Also, housed inside
the Forum (museum) is an innovative attraction named Origins which explores
2000 years of local history.
To appreciate Norwich's medieval past you must walk around its picturesque
centre, particularly Elm Hill with its cobbled road, timber-framed houses and
boutique shops, where you can soak-up the atmosphere of a bygone age. Another
place to visit on foot is Norwich market - one of the largest and most colourful
in the country.
Leisure options are many and varied, from watching the well-rated football
team, viewing a play at the splendid Theatre Royal or having a glass of wine
and a bite to eat at the many stylish bars and restaurants which line the Tombland
area near the cathedral. Shoppers can look for antiques on Elm Hill, bargains
at the market or brand names in the pedestrianised centre.
For those seeking to travel further afield, Norwich is ideally situated to
explore the waterways known as the Norfolk broads by renting a boat and traversing
its quiet streams and canals and stopping at the regular pubs which line its
banks. The historic university town of Cambridge is also within easy driving
distance.
There is an hourly train service from London's Liverpool Street Station (duration:
2 hours). To get there by car from London, head north towards Cambridge on the
M11 and turn northeast at the junction with the A11. Luton and Stansted airports
are within driving distance and receive flights from many European cities.
