Geography of Nottingham

Nottinghamshire is a county of central England divided into eight districts:
Ashfield, Bassetlaw, Broxtowe, Gedling, Mansfield, Newark and Sherwood, Rushcliffe
and, of course, Nottingham. The city of Nottingham is located in the southern
half of the county and is the capital of Nottinghamshire and the regional capital
of the East Midlands. Nottinghamshire is bordered on the north-west by Yorkshire,
on the west by Derbyshire, on the south by Leicestershire, and on the east and
north-east by Lincolnshire.
Nottinghamshire has no seaboard, making the Trent River an important transportation
route. The Trent is 147 miles long and is the second longest river in England,
after the Severn. It has played an important role throughout the history of
Nottingham and was a crucial factor in the commercial development of the area.
During the 19th century, the railways and roads took over as important transportation
routes, relegating the importance of the river. However, now there is renewed
interested to make better commercial use of the river network again.
Besides Nottingham is the smaller town of Derby, and within easy driving is
Leicester to the south and Birmingham to the southwest. The magnificent Peak
District National Park is also adjacent to Nottingham and ca be easily reached
from this base.
