What to see by foot: Nottingham

Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery overlooks the city. The Castle was
built in 1679 by the Duke of Newcastle on the site of an old Norman fortress.
The only surviving element of the Norman fortress is a subterranean passage
called Mortimer's Hole, leading to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, on Brewhouse Yard
at Castle Road. Purportedly it is the oldest inn in Britain. Particularly interesting
is the History of Nottingham Gallery, recreating the legends associated with
the city, plus a rare collection of ceramics and a unique exhibition of medieval
alabaster carvings. A statue of Robin Hood stands at the base of the castle.
The historic Lace Market area, which was developed out of the large lace and
textile factories and warehouses that opened up in the 18th century, has been
renovated into an elegant cultural, educational and residential quarter. Here
you will find trendy cafés, restaurants, plenty of shopping, museums,
theatre, entertainment and much more.
The Museum of Costume and Textiles houses one of the best collections of period
costumes in Britain, with exhibitions ranging from the 17th century up to the
Carnaby Street era of the 1960s. There are also lace, weavings, and embroideries,
all an important part of Nottingham's textile heritage. Don't miss the magnificent
Eyre Map Tapestries, which were woven in 1632 and show the geography of the
region.
The Brewhouse Yard Museum is made up of five 17th century cottages, presenting
a realistic glimpse of everyday domestic and commercial life in Nottingham over
the last 300 years. There are displays of recreational and educational life
and working conditions of local people. There is also a display of a Nottingham
shopping street from around the 1920s.
For something different, visit the Galleries of Justice. These 19th century
courts have been restored and house an excellent interactive display, which
is especially interesting for children. Get a dose of Victorian justice - you
can get a criminal identity, stand trial in the courts and, if found guilty,
even receive your 'mock' sentence.
