What to see by car: Nottingham

The legendary Sherwood Forest Country Park comprises 450 acres of oak and silver
birch trees and is owned and strictly protected by the Thoresby Estate. Located
30kms north of Nottingham, the Park has many marked walking paths and the infamous
'Major Oak', also known as Robin Hood's tree, although analysis of the bark
has shown that it did not exist in the 13th century. At the Visitor's Centre,
there is an exhibition of life-size models of Robin Hood and other well-known
outlaws.
Wollaton Hall, 5kms south west from Nottingham, is a well-preserved Elizabethan
mansion. Built in 1588, it is the most ornate Tudor building in England. Robert
Smythson designed it on the commission of Sir Francis Willoughby and much of
the original building remains, showing the style of architecture contemporaneous
with the Spanish Armada. It houses a natural history museum, with one of the
most beautiful bird dioramas in Britain. The surrounding 500 acre deer park
features a large lake and an iron-framed Camellia House dating from the 1820s.
Newstead Abbey, 19 km north of Nottingham in Linby, is where Lord Byron once
made his home. Some of the original Augustinian priory, purchased by Sir John
Byron in 1540, still survives. In the 19th century, the mansion was given a
neo-Gothic restoration and showcases Byron's first editions and manuscripts.
The surrounding 300 acres of parkland includes waterfall, rose garden, a Japanese
water garden and a monk's stew pond.
D. H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum is located a few miles north west of Nottingham
in Eastwood. Lawrence was one of Britain's most famous authors. The house Lawrence
was born in has been restored and the museum showcases his life and works. It
contains furniture and furnishings that would have been found in a miner's home,
along with memorabilia relating to the author.
