Historical interest: Nottingham

The name Nottingham derives from the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Snotingham (the
village of Snot's people). The Anglo-Saxon's settled in the area in the 6th
century and it was occupied by the Danes in the 9th century, becoming their
most important centre - Nottingham eventually became one of the five Danish
boroughs.
The Normans recognised the strategic importance of Nottingham, guarding the
River Trent, and built a castle here. Throughout the medieval era the city played
an important defensive role, and the castle was of great strategic importance
for many monarchs. It was also during the medieval period that the city's most
famous legend grew up - the legend of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. The castle
was later used by Prince John in the times of the crusades and in 1485 by King
Richard III, as well as King Charles at the beginning of the Civil War.
In 1589 William Lee invented a stocking frame and this marked the beginning
of the hosiery and textile industry in Nottingham. With the arrival of the steam
engine in the 19th century, Nottingham was well placed to take advantage of
this new technology thanks to its close proximity to the coal fields. The lace
making trade grew rapidly with the new industrialisation and so too did the
population. Famous industry names like John Player cigarettes, Boots Pharmaceuticals
and Raleigh bicycles, all originated from Nottingham. In 1897, Nottingham was
granted city status by Queen Victoria.
Nottingham saw rapid growth in the 20th century, with the introduction of electric
trams at the beginning of the century. A spate of building began between the
1920s and 1950s, with many urban areas spawning in and around the city. The
growth of the numerous universities and colleges influenced the character and
culture of the city as well. The main industries now in Nottingham are; textiles,
tobacco, bicycles, pharmaceuticals and printing.
