Mini guide to Oswestry

Located in the west of England near the Welsh border, Oswestry is a bustling market town consisting of an array of fine old buildings from the Victorian and Georgian periods, and numerous hotels and inns as a testament to the days when the town was a stagecoach and railway centre.

The market, dating from the late 12th century, is Oswestry's main draw and consists of more than 100 stalls selling an array of goods. Also of special interest is the massive Iron Age hill fort of Old Oswestry, lying just outside the town.

The town of Oswestry is one of narrow alleyways and a splendid mixture of architectural styles and as a result it has been declared a conservation area. Many of the important buildings are timber framed, including the Heritage Centre and the shops along Beatrice street, while St Oswald's Church is predominantly Georgian. Other sights in the town include Whittington Castle, Cae Glas Park and the old town gates.

Oswestry has a good selection of shops that include well known British high street stores as well as local and independent shops, while local arts and crafts can be discerned at the Heritage Centre during exhibitions. Oswestry also has a racecourse and plenty of restaurants and café bars.

Nearby Whittington boasts a fine castle and a little farther away along the same road is Ellesmere with its glacial meres (the Anglo Saxon word for lake). Just past Ellesmere on a loop to Shrewsbury is Wem, home of the sweet pea. It is set amid beautiful landscapes and was the birthplace of Charles Darwin. For keen walkers is the nearby, well maintained Offa's Dyke (the English-Welsh border path from Prestatyn to Chepstow), which follows an ancient earthwork that was built by King Offa.

The M56 and M53 motorway as well as the Chester-Wrexham route provide road access from the north, while the M54 and A5 link Oswestry with London and Birmingham. Rail services from London go via Birmingham and National Express runs regular coach services from Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester throughout the day. The nearest airports are at Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool, and Manchester and Birmingham's airports are on the main rail line that connects with Oswestry.
