Geography of Oxford
    
Oxford is the principal city of Oxfordshire, a county bounded by Buckinghamshire,
Gloucestershire, Berkshire, Warwickshire, and Northamptonshire. The air is sweet,
mild, pleasant, and healthy, for which reason it contains several gentlemen's
seats; and the soil is fertile in corn and grass, and the hills are shaded with
woods. It is also a great sporting country, with an abundance of game preserved
here. It is alao chiefly agricultural.
The countryside surrounding Oxford is full of stunning wooded areas and parklands,
including Chilswell Valley, Grandpont Park, Iffley Triangle Nature Reserve and
Shotover Country Park.
Chilswell Valley can be reached by walking up Chilswell Path from where it leaves
the road to Wyvale Garden Centre near the Southern Bypass. There are magnificent
views of Oxford from the top of the valley.
Grandpont Park has been developed into an attractive setting for a lunch break
and a haven for wildlife, a stone's throw from the city centre.
The meadows at Iffley stretch for over a kilometre from Donnington Bridge to
South of the Bypass and are most famous for the Snakes Head fritillaries which
bloom in their thousands. Your best chance of seeing these flowers is in the
middle of April.
On the eastern fringes of Oxford, Shotover Country Park is a whole hillside
of hidden valleys, sudden views and varied habitats which are freely accessible
all the year round.
The lovely Thames valley can also be followed, on foot or bike, to Reading
and onwards towards London.
