What to see by foot: Oxford

Oxford is a cultural and compact city, the delights of which can be enjoyed
comfortably on foot with rickshaw taxis available for those seeking a more exotic
form of transportation. The city abounds in museums and galleries, and, of course,
the famous Christ Church College - one of several educational institutions collectively
known as Oxford University, and Cathedral.
The 17th century Tom Tower marks the main entrance to Christ Church College,
Oxford's largest and most prestigious college. Beyond the main entrance is the
striking Tom Quad, the largest quad in Oxford and whose soft, honey-coloured
stone makes a harmonious whole. A staircase in the southeast corner of the quad
reaches the dining hall, the grandest refectory in Oxford. A passage at the
northeast corner of the Tom Quad leads through to the Peckwater Quad and the
library, and from here you can pass through to the Canterbury Quad. To the rear
of the Tom Quad stands the stunning Cathedral and lovely Christ Church Meadow,
the pick of the numerous university parks spread across the town.
The Museum of Modern Art houses a collection of 20th century works, while two
other museums, the Oxford Story and the Museum of Oxford tell the history of
the city and university. The Bodleian Library is one of the country's most historic
and important, and music lovers can indulge in the fascinating collection of
the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments. Prehistory buffs can knock themselves
out in the enthralling Pitt Rivers Museum which claims one of the best anthropology
collections in the world.
There's a good view of the 'city of the dreaming spires' from the 14th century
Carfax Tower, while other architectural wonders to seek out include the 11th
century Saxon Tower of St Michael at the North Gate and the 13th century University
Church of St Mary the Virgin.
Oxford has plenty of quiet tranquil backwaters to relax in, including the River
Thames bordering Port Meadow; many within walking distance of the CBD. The Cherwell
Boat House is a popular hangout for locals and visitors alike to try out their
punting skills. Another popular retreat is the Oxford Botanic Garden, the oldest
botanic garden in Britain.
