What to see by car: Oxford
    
The rolling dales of the Oxfordshire countryside are best explored by car,
and there is plenty to see, from quaint historic villages to vast expanses of
natural scenery.
The Thames meanders through the city and countryside beyond. West of Oxford
lie the Cotswolds, an area of quaint villages, and yellow stone houses. There
are many historical buildings in Oxfordshire including Blenheim Palace, the
home of Winston Churchill, and Sulgrave Manor, the home of George Washington's
family.
Burford contains all manner of houses, shops and inns, some dating from the
15th century, while Faringdon was the first capital of the ancient kingdom of
Wessex and site of the castle of Alfred the Great. Charming Kidlington has a
13th century church, farm and a vicarage dating from the 16th century, as well
as some large Georgian houses and Hampden House with its 18th century pavilion.
Wallingford has a darker history, and the remains of William the Conqueror's
Wallingford Castle can be seen to this day, together with the ruins of the town
walls. Other towns of historical interest include Wantage and Witney.
Henley is best known for its Royal Regatta held every July since 1839. For
about a mile at Henley the river is straight providing an ideal course for what
has become a major international event. The present five-arched bridge over
the river was built in 1786 with the 13th century Church of St. Mary close by.
Just outside of Oxford, in Henley-on-Thames, is the Bohun Gallery. This is
a small commercial gallery of particular interest to those keen on contemporary
British figurative art.
A beautiful day's outing can be had in the Cotswold Wildlife Park, Burford,
while Port Meadow is one of the premier bird watching locales in the country,
in addition to being rich in prehistoric sites.
The attractions of London and Windsor are also within an hour's drive, as are
leisure parks such as Chessington, Legoland and Thorpe Park.
