Mini guide to Peak District

Situated between Manchester and Sheffield, the Peak District National Park is full of delightful villages, historic sites and majestic scenery. Popular with walkers and climbers, the Peak District provides some of England's most spectacular views.

The High Moors of the Northern Peak District are ripe for exploration by foot. The highest point is on Kinder Scout (2088 ft) and this wild and more remote region can give the sense of freedom to the serious walker. The Central Peaks region is less remote and contains two beautiful rivers the Wye and the Derwent and both provide walks full of local interest. There is also the beautiful Dovedale valley in the South Peaks.

The Peak District is a haven for anglers with great fishing to be had both in the Dovedale river and in the Manifold river. In the Manifold Valley there is a preserved village, Ilam, and this is a recommended starting point for exploring the Manifold Valley.

Ashbourne is one of Derbyshire's best loved towns. It is full of Georgian architecture and its narrow, winding streets contain a fine selection of art and craft shops, tea rooms and traditional pubs. Church Street has been described as 'The finest Street in Derbyshire', and well worth a stroll down. Buxton is an historic spa town and Bakewell offers perhaps the prettiest village you could visit.

Taking a break from this rural life is easy too. The cities of Manchester and Sheffield are both within an hour's drive, where you can shop, eat and go to the theatre in style. Or you could visit Stoke-on-Trent to see, and possibly buy, some of the most famous pottery in England.

The Peak District can be accessed either by the M6 or M1. By air you can fly in to Manchester International Airport, which is only an hour's drive away. InterCity trains from London go to both Manchester and Sheffield and take approximately 3 hours. The closest you can get to the park by rail is Matlock in the east or Buxton in the west, services to both are infrequent.
